Learning is enhanced through reflection exercises and small-group activities. Large-group discussion further
enriches participants’ experience.
Prior to attending the virtual workshop, genetic counseling students complete three online modules
(“Communicating With the Bereaved,” “Memory-Making and Ritual,” and “Guided Participation: A Theory of
Teaching and Learning”).

Laura Birkeland, MS, CGC
Laura earned her BA in Biology at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2000, and after completing her MS in Medical Genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007, she began her clinical work in prenatal genetic counseling with UnityPoint Health-Meriter. In 2010, she joined UW Health’s MGCS program where she developed her interest in program development and student education. In 2014, she became the assistant program director for the Master of Genetic Counselor Studies program at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Most recently, she became the UWSMPH program director for Master of Genetic Counselor Studies in April of 2022. In this role, Laura provides expert leadership, vision, and oversight to continue the growth and positive impact of this key health professions education program (Petty, 2022).
