Presenter: Darryl Owens, MDiv., BCC, CT, CPLC

Darryl received his Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Relations from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill and his Master of Divinity from Duke University. After graduating, he served as a clinical chaplain at Central Prison in Raleigh. Since 2001, Darryl has served in his current role as a women’s services chaplain/grief counselor at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Darryl provides pastoral care and grief counseling to patients, families, and staff of NC Women’s Hospital. Additionally, he manages the perinatal bereavement program, serves on the hospital bereavement team, and co-facilitates community bereavement support groups.

Topic: Coping With the Holidays: How Do I Survive This Season?

Exploring grief through examining separation or threatened separation from anything which fosters psychological attachment, Darryl will discuss various types of loss experienced during the holiday season, including losses resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Themes of the presentation include ritual, the nature of holiday grief, coping strategies for the bereaved, and helpful tips for individuals supporting those grieving.
